I have been fortunate enough to have travelled around the world and travelled to over 60 countries.
My top 4:
1. Japan. Third world countries start to look alike after a while and there are few places like Japan where EVERYTHING is so... so... so darned Japanese! I mean everything is done differently, from architecture, culture, food... everything. Simply overload of cultural differences. Fantastic place, friendly people, easy to get around. The downside is that it is whoppingly expensive. Best bargain: the J-Rail pass.
2. Nepal. You want nature? This is nature at its most awesome, raw and beautiful. I took over a month in Nepal, trekking up to Mt. Everest - which is stunning. Yawning canyons, spiralling mountain peaks, plodding djopkyos (cross between yaks and cows), lonely mountain stupa temples, red robed monks, spinning prayer wheels, endless silence and time for introspection. Also took a 2 week white water rafting trip to a place so remote that there are no mosquitos... no nothing. Class 5 rapids for days will keep you on an adreneline high for weeks afterwards! Cheap, cheap, cheap place. Downside: trekking is not for weekend warriors. You are going to get sick, lose lots of weight and your hygeine is going to suffer. Also, slight risk of dying at hands of Maoist rebels.
3. Egypt. Spent a month (including the millenium) there. Pretty obvious why - the pyramids, tombs, Cairo Egyptology museum, wonderful people, lazy falucca rides down the Nile, the soaring temples at Abu Simbel, the endless deserts and the hippy-dippy backpacker places on the Sinai. Great diving. Downside: Security, Egyptian food gets a bit monotonous, aggressive merchants
4. Kenya or Tanzania. Nothing beats a safari, sleeping among the stars and being dangerously close to being back in the food chain. There's the zoo and Discovery Channel, but this is like the difference between a picture of the Grand Canyon and being there. Go when the Wildebeest go from the Serengheti plains in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya. Hid up a tree from a black Rhino. Saw a 15 foot long crocodile, a hidden clutch of fluffy baby cheetahs, a lioness surprise down a Thomson's Gazelle, saw (well mostly smelled) a hyena with a dismembered leg in its mouth and more animals than you can shake a stick at. The Masai are gorgeous, wonderful people. Bring a camera, a tripod, a 300mm lens and enough memory cards/batteries. Safari is less expensive than you think. Downside: sleeping in a dung hut with cows, Nairobi ("Nairbobbery"), accidentally using charcoal where the locals burn every tree down in sight to make.
