A router provides another layer of protection to your firewall, but it is not faster. You won't have to log in any more, as your router logs in.
Get the router when you need it. Just like everything else, they don't last forever.
Good luck and Happy computing!

The DSL modem likely includes a router, so a second one wouldn't speed things up anyway. The purpose of a router is to assign an IP address to the PC, and to manage traffic, permitting or not permitting traffic to specific ports.
What's called a router in stores, is actually a combination of a router and a switch. traffic flows from the router to the internal switch, and then to the correct PC. A switch is a device that make a physical connection between two network appliances, such as the PC and the router. Adding such a device when you have only one PC will not improve performance. Should you get another PC, you have two options: you can purchase a switch or a hub. The router in the DSL modem will still work. The advantage of a switch would be apparent if you have communication between PC's as well as from the router. If you aren't playing games, sending large files back and forth, a hub will probably work as well as a switch. Many people purchase 100Base T, thinking it will be faster over the Internet, but most home Internet connections dont go nearly that fast. It's great for games involving multiple computers, but not for increasing Internet speed.

Router is NOT much faster. Router simply makes the network more "efficient" in that it shares the available bandwidth among all the PCs on the network. So individual PCs on the network don't really notice the difference.
Ethernet connection nowadays are usually 100BaseT, which is capable of 100 Mbps, whereas your ADSL is like maybe 8 MBps downstream. You can see the difference yourself.

No. A router will not increase the speed of your Internet connection. In fact, if you only have one computer, it might be slightly faster to connect directly to the DSL modem and remove an intermediate step.
A router is only useful when you have multiple devices to connect. All it does is shuttle data back and forth between the devices connected to it.
However, you still might want to get a router for its firewall features (most routers have them) or so that you don't have to log into your 'net connection all the time.

Get an ethernet DSL modem. You will thank me.
The cheap DSL modems that run only through USB will suck. And they don't give you an options to network if you don't have an ethernet port.

Don't buy it unless you need it. Right now, you don't need it.
If you plan on buying a new computer, want to hook up your playstation or xbox, or go wireless, you don't need it.
