Thanks to all for your input. It has helped me tremendously. Especially to Smartass for the model numbers.

I find Kenmore from Sears is the best brand. That is all I have used over the past 20 years ... only have had to buy one, still works like a charm

If you want a nice quiet washer, I'd suggest going with a Kenmore or Whirlpool. If your machine is on a first level, you may want to consider going with a front load machine. If you do a lot of laundry or tend to wash large loads, the end up saving a lot of energy and water. Front load machines can use 1/3 of the energy and as little as 15 gallons of water vs 45 with a regular top load machine.
Which machine is going to depend on what you wash and how large of a load you are washing. If you need a medium size washer (2-4 people, queen size blanket) look at the HE2 Plus or HE2t. If you need something a bit more industrial, look for the HE4t by Kenmore. It's rated #1 in consumer reports.
If your machine is on a second story, you probably will be happier with a top load machine. Although they aren't as efficient, they tend to shake less on a second or third story. The kenmore Oasis is a nice washer that uses 50% less energy and water and you can wash practically anything in there.
You may want to ask about tax credits or utility company promotions for energy efficient machines. Sometimes you can get some extra money back for buying energy star washers.
If those washers are out of your price range, there are still really good top load washers for $400 to $500 by Kenmore. The Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving are going to be great days to buy. The deals at Sears will be the same during the evening as they are in the morning, so you won't have to fight the crowd.

Go with the Kenmore, that's all I've ever used and they're great. And Sears has a great customer service center, although I've never needed to use them.
A word about Kenmore vs. Whirlpool...they're essentially the same thing. Whirlpool makes the Kenmore brand for Sears, and Sears slaps their own stuff onto it and makes it a store brand. So technically either one would be sufficient since they're the same thing, but usually you can get Kenmore's the cheapest (like buying generic store brands of anything else).

I have an LG washing machine, its into its 4th year and its a great machine. Everything is just push button. I have seen new machines in the Good Guys catalogue that use this new steaming technique which saves heaps of water and apparently gets your clothes cleaner than ever. I dont know how much they are but might be worth looking into. A few friends have front loaders and rave about them, however Im not into the bending over thing every time you need to load and unload. Cheers.

Samsung if the brand is available in your place. They are establishing at a fast pace. You will get the best service.
LG service is very bad. Any established brand is bad for they take things for granted. Service is the main criterion, because no one would make a bad washing machine.

I recommend Sears get a Kenmore I've had two of them in 45years married with 5 in the family, and always had good luck with them. Just make sure when you get one that you can add the softener to it, and it will dispense when your wash rinses, its a great feature.
