Why didnt Silverchair become huge in the States? Is it because of Daniels (lead singer) health issues and goinginto isolation? I just cant get enough of there music and they make me want to move to Aus...speaking of, any Aussies reading this? I was wondering how Silverchair has effected Aus., Do they have small shows there? Do you ever just see them around? Also what is Aus. culture like? I have a friend from there and I think she is great but I dont know much about the culture.
Thanks!

Silverchair never made it big in the states for the same reason other aussie bands never made it big. People from the states are too closed minded to listen to aussie music. Sure we have acts like wolfmother who are making an impression over there now, and we had INXS and ACDC, but these guys made or make it by not sounding Australian. Think Cold Chisel, Crowded House, Aussie Crawl, LRB. although LRB did have a few US hits. Silverchair were simply too Australian. Plus i think they only put out a couple of albums and they haven't been together, at least recording, since probably the year 2000. Although Daniel Johns did have a few side projects, notably the dissasociatives, who put out an album a couple of years back.

I am a bit old for Silverchair but I know a bit.

They were very big up till about 5 years ago. They were doing some concerts recently so they havent broken up completely.

They come from Newcastle, which is a steel making town about 100 miles north of Sydney. The steelworks closed in the 90s and the town went into a slump, although it appears to have rcovered now.

They won a national talent quest run by triple J, a nationally networked progressive music station. They then changed their name to silverchair and took off. They won every category they were eligible for in the ARIA (our grammy) awards for a couple of years.

Daniel Johns was ill for a while. When he came back he joined with a keyboard player and producer, Paul Mack, to form the Dissosciates (not sure of spelling), but they didnt do much.

If you are going to move to Australia, you will have to learn to eat pies and drink beer. You also have to be able to understand cricket. We have recently toughened up our immigration rules and you cannot even get a tourist visa unless you know the lyrics to at least 2 Rolf Harris songs

Silverchair have completed work on a new album "Young Modern" which will be released in Australia early 2007. They have been calling for extras this week for a video shoot in a week or so.
Daniel's health issues had some effect on the 'chair's success overseas. His illness came at a bad time - they had recorded their critically acclaimed "Diorama" album, and were unable to tour it becuase of his illness. Daniel married Aussie singer/actress Natalie Imbruglia ("Torn"), and formed The Dissociatives with DJ/producer Paul Mac (who usually tours with Silverchair on keyboards). Drummer Ben Gillies formed Tambalane last year, and they released an album, which sold moderately well. Silverchair are intent on breaking "Young Modern" internationally in 2007. And no, I don't work for them..LOL

mmm well being an aussie we have a very health music scene, however silver chair really havent had much more then a mention here in the last few years.
As to why they never really cracked the us market, I think that they came at a time when rnb and rap where all the flavour not good old fashioned rock.
dont get me wrong i love the band and what they have accomplished it amazing.

Maybe because, at the time, they were overshadowed by the bigger alternative acts. Yeah, they got their airplay because everyone thought they were talented... for their age. BUT, it was hard going up against Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, Alice in Chains type bands back then. Probably didn't help either that they (surely) had school and such to deal with instead of being able to put their all into music.
