i have a small studio in my house (i teach guitar lessons, have a band, and do recording), and honestly, i feel like i'm getting taken for a ride when i spend more than $100 for headphones. there doesnt seem to be as much bang for the buck after the first hundred you spend. i've tried both brands ( i liked the shure ones better), but i still dont think theyre worth the extra money over the Sony pair i had that cost me $79.

just try them and see what you think, after i tried them, i couldnt justify the spending.

I would also recommend Shure. BUT They are NOT noise cancelling. They are noise isolating. They create a blockage in the ear so as to stop out side noise (just like an earplug). Noise cancelling use sound technology to try and cancel out external noise.

The Shures are by far the better ear phone. Superiour sound range and dynamics with fantastic bass! The E3Cs are not worth the extra money over the E2Cs. But the E4Cs are awesome if you can afford them, the 5s and the 500PTH are just out of this world. I think you friend did good with recommending the 4s
