The holiday was named Easter after the goddess, Eostre, by Anglo-Saxons because the date roughly paralleled her festival times. It was similarly named by the Romans even before that and was fixed in the month of April on the Julian calendar. If you really wished to celebrate Easter approximately on the correct date, you should celebrate on Passover because the last supper for Jesus was a Passover Seder and he was killed the next day. However, this is difficult for Christians and those using the Julian calendar because Jews actually care about tradition and have a calendar that is based on a 30 day month and adds a 13th month every 7 years. So the exact date of Easter fluctuates on the Julian calendar according to the date for Passover on the Jewish calendar, maintained accurately for almost 6000 years now.

It used to be a pagan spring festival of fertility honoring the goddess Eostre. What do you think eggs and Easter bunnies represent? Early Christians just co-opted an existing festival. Christmas was the same.
