Read Stephen King's The Shining. I'm half-way through it right now and I can vouch for it. It's a great read, not to mention, a classic.

I thought "The Basket of Flowers" was a good book but most people don't like it.
You may enjoy John Grisham's first novel however " A Time to Kill" I think his best work yet, or "The Brethen" both are legal mysteries.
There are also Tom Clancy's books "Red Rabbit" is th most recent one I've read. His books are also legal/law related mysteries but they are all military based.

Ann Rice writes good novels as well unfortunately I can't remember the title of any of her books off the top of my head. I think she was the primary person responsible for the inspiration of the plot of the movie "Queen of the Damned". Most of her books are about vampires.

Then there are books which one may consider classic literature, stuff like Jane Eyre, White Saragossa Sea, Bridges of Madison County and Pride and Prejudice.

I am afraid I am not much help when it comes to fantasy or comic/comedic books. The only one that comes to mind was written by a West Indian playwright Trevor Rhone, titled " Old Story Time" which is set in Jamaica in the 60s I believe " Smile Orange" is even more hilarious and set around the same period.

I'll join you in the hunt for a good book pretty soon.. I've got me eye on to titles by Micheal Manley " Up the Down Escalator" and " The Politics of Change".

For fun I might piece up a copy of "Auntie Roache Seh" by Louise Bennett.

Oh. I almost for got. Try " Memoirs of a Geisha". I read it. It was good. Tried to find something similar to it when I was done I had no luck.

I hope I was of some help.

You could read something like:

The Lightning Thief
The Thief Lord
Uglies (this is a more girl book though)
Redwall
Dragonwings
Dragon of the Lost Sea
Piercing the Darkness
Letters from a Nut (this is a hilarious book! I suggest it for anyone who's looking for a laugh)
Watership Down (good thick novel, took me about a month to read)
The Harry Potter Series
The Lord of the Rings Series
The Specter from the Magician's Museum
Tangerines (I think that was the name, that or some other citrus fruit like an orange or grapefruit)

I've read at least part of all the books I mentioned, most I've read a few times at least.

Read one of these books.

1. While the clock Ticked (Hardy Boys)
2. The Rising Force, by Dave Wolverton
3. Dew Drop Dead, by James Howe

Dew Drop Dead is where these kids look in a house and find a dead body on a bed! When the police comes, it's not there anymore! What happened!

These are all Mystery books.

Glad to help!

Read John Grishams "The Testament" It's funny and quite entertaining. I loved it and I read several books a week.

I also recommend Rex Stout and his Nero Wolfe mystery series. Do a google search on Nero Wolfe or Rex Stout, you will be amazed at the number of followers that have enjoyed this man's creative genius.

"The Secret Life Of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd. Very moving tale of a young girl raised in the south during the Civil Rights Era.

Also, just my opinion only...Dan Brown is one of the most overrated authors of the past decade.
