I believe, along with certain Greek philosophers, Buddhists, and religious mystics that happiness is loving things exactly as they are. The mind is naturally restless and discontent, so it requires mental training to find happiness. Meditation is one such discipline - it trains the mind to accept things as they are in the here and now. Relaxation exercises do the same thing. Or, if you're a Christian, you might call it the discipline of "letting go and letting god." A secular version might be the Socratic-like questioning of your stressful and resistant thoughts. Something like The Work of Byron Katie: http://www.thework.com
I've done a lot of Buddhist meditation, worked with Byron Katie's method, and experimented with various relaxation techniques like EFT. They've all been useful in helping me to grow in contentment. In my experience, happiness is something that requires consistent effort.
My two cents.

Happiness can change day by day. One day you can be completely happy than the next day sad. You never know what is going to happen in your life that is going to change that. People put too much emphasis on being happy. I have heard too many people say that they just want to be happy, but there is no way anybody is going to feel that way everyday of their life. I do think there is a difference though with feeling satisfied or contented with your life. Knowing that you have lived your life the best way you could have and knowing that you have affected others in a positive way.

seek and you will find it-- ask and it will be given. it really is that simple.
the DaliLama says that happiness is the meaning of life. When you get out of bed tomorrow, put your feet on the floor and state "I am happy". Say it 3 times. Go about your day look for positive things that happen.....You got a good parking spot at work, your first cup of coffee is just wonderful, be greatful for small things entire day, say thank a lot, and see what happens. just try it for one day.

Having known loss, I can appreciate what I have. Having known hunger, I can enjoy fulfillment. Having known thirst, I know the value of a drink of good water.
Happiness is a bit of food and a cool drink with the ones you love.
Happy Thanksgiving.

true happiness means having an assurance that my soul will not get lost into eternal damnation but have everlasting life as promised by one Man and His divine act carried out almost 2000 years back from now.
i am not satisfied with my life now. many loopholes and anomalies in my life. but if i "seek His kingdom first all these things will be added" to me. "the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches" are restricting me from going forward to take up my cross and follow Him. sooner than i think i will follow Him.
if people dont agree to what i believe, they are free not to. whatever, its true for me.

I would define happiness as anything that is not sadness...
But the definition of happiness and weighing happiness is often argued to be impossible. This is one of the main falls of the theory of Utilitarianism.

happiness doesn't just happen...you have to make it happen. when you have a passion for someone or something and it is the one thing you would pursue for free.....and it is rewarding while doing it...then you ae probably happy.
also, meditation actually does work and make you happy...it's amazing, but it works. i'm too damn lazy to do it all the time ..but when i do...i'm feeling pretty good.
being around positive people can help too...but when you are stressed out it doesn't matter who you are around. again, meditation helps with stress tooo.
