Gainsborough's Emulsion Cleaner can be applied with a cotton swab to remove smoke and dirt from the painting.

A neutral soap should help, with distilled water, you must use only the bubbles. afterwards, you can glaze the painting with the clear part of an egg as a kind of varnish that will protect it from atmospheric pollutants, that can then be cleaned with plain water (preferebly distilled).

If it is a good one, get it professionally cleaned.

If not, try a mild soap water on a q tip in a corner and see that it doesn;t smear the oil....try a rag if it looks ok.

I would and have used dawn dish soap (just a bit) in warm watter and be careful when cleaning, if you clean them every month or so they should stay looking good!

mild solution of soap and water scrub GENTLY and wipe off grime , gently is the key word.
