Why is Pluto being strongly challenged as being a planet?

The main difference between the discoveries of Uranus and Neptune was that the existence of Neptune was deduced before it was ever observed, due to perturbations in the orbit of Uranus. Uranus, on the other hand, was discovered purely by observation.

Pluto is no longer considered a planet, because it does not meet the definition set down by the International Astronomy Union. This year, it was specified that a planet must have cleared the neighborhood of its orbit, and Pluto has not done this, relegating it to the status of a dwarf planet.
