My mooch friend just moved out after I asked him to contribute and he refused so I said he had to go ( over a month staying here). Well the problem is that his stuff (furniture, boxes, clothes, etc.) are still here. How long do I have to house his stuff without legal penalty?

If there was no agreement or understanding between you concerning his stay or his stuff, whether at the beginning or at any time during the stay, you are under no obligation to continue to keep his stuff in your house. However, since you did permit him to bring it into your house, you need to give him reasonable notice and an opportunity to come and retreive it before you put it out on the street or do something else with it.

I don't understand your concern about legal penalty? If it's your place with rent checks and utilities paid and signed with your name -- I see the opposite of you. You can bring him to court on a simple premise of "breaking and entering."

Send him a 'registered letter,' letter that states a date you want his remainings out and that includes what you intend to do with his possessions -- like burn them! His signature from the registered letter will render proof that he his aware of what is to come if he does not act.

I can think of one site that offers free legal counsel -- AARP. Please check the web for free legal council sites.

How dare him and great for you!

you have no obligation to anything...you could literally put it all out in the street tonight and there would be nothing he could do... you're a good friend, don't let anyone take advantage of you though...
