Mom placed some cookies in a jar. Charles went to the jar and had 1/4 of the cookies. Ashley had 1/3 of the cookies left over by Charles. Dad went and had 1/2 of the cookies left over by Ashley. When Mrs. Kim went to the jar there were 2 cookies left. How many cookies did mom put into the cookie jar???

Please explain as if u were teaching a 2 yr. old because I'm sort of stupid in Math!!! Also explain throughly what u did!!!

You start from the end and work backward. If Dad ate half the cookies and left two, he must have eaten two so when he got there there were 4. Ashley had just eaten 1/3 of the cookies, so she had left 2/3 in the jar. Well, four is two/thirds of six so when she got there there were six cookies. Charles had eaten 1/4 meaning he had left 3/4 of the cookies. Well, 6 is 3/4 of 8 so originally there were 8 cookies in the jar. Good luck, hope that helped.

OK, lets say the number of cookes in the jar is T

Then Charles took T/4 cookies

which left T-T/4 or (3/4) T cookies

Ashley took 1/3 of those or (1/3) x (3/4) x T = T/4

Which left T - T/2 or (1/2) T

Dad took 1/2 of what was left or (1/2) x (1/2) x T = T/4

Which left (1/2)T - (1/4) T or T/4

Mrs Kim found T/4 or 2 cookies left

Mom put T cookes or (2 x 4) = 8 cookies in the jar




Check the answer

Charles = T/4 = 2 cookies
Ashley = (T - T/4) / 3 = 2 cookies
Dad took T/4 = 2 cookies
Mrs Kim found 2 cookies
total is 8

Let's work it backwards.

Mrs. Kim found 2 cookies.

Dad ate half of what he found, so he found 4 cookies.

Ashley ate 1/3 of what she found, so there must have been twice as many left (4) as what she ate (2), meaning she found 6 cookies.

Charles ate 1/4 of what he found, so there must have been 3 times as many left (6) as what he ate (2), meaning he found 8 cookies that mom had put in the jar.

There is a way to say all this algebraically:

Original - Charles's - Ashley's - Dad"s = What's left

x - (1/4)x -(1/3)(3/4x) - (1/2)(1/2)x = 2

x - (1/4)x - (1/4)x - (1/4)x = 2

(1/4)x = 2

x = 8

First make all the fractions in LCD form. 4, 3, and 2 go in to 12. so 1/4 is equal to 3/12, 1/3 is equal to 4/12, and 1/2 is equal to 6/12. Now you add the numerators, 3 + 4 + 6 is 13 so its 13/12. When mrs.kim went to the jar there was two left so add 2, which is the same as 24/12. the answer is 37/12 or 3 1/12 as a mixed fraction

in this case you are going to have to work backwards.

you know that the 2 cookies left represent 1/2 of the cookies left over by dad, so before he had any cookies there were 4. you also know that 4 cookies were left after ashley had 1/3 of the number that were in the cookie jar, meaning that 2/3 of that number was still in the cookie jar after she finished eating. 4 is 2/3 of 6, so you know that 6 cookies were in the jar after charles had 1/4 of the cookies that were there initially. this means that there were originally 8 cookies in the cookie jar.

Charlesate=1/4
balance=3/4
ashley had 1/3 of 3/4=1/4
balance 1/2
dad had 1/2 of 1/2=1/4
cookies left=1/4=2
so total,multiplying by 4 is8
