There is a wonderful product called "Nature's Miracle". You can buy it in most pet stores, and if applied properly, it will remove the stain and smell. I buy it here in Canada, but I would assume it is also available in the U.S.. It is non staining to materials, and is honestly the best product I've ever seen for this problem.
I have 3 cats, and 2 dogs, so I speak from a great deal of experience!! Hahaha!!
They come in various sizes, but in your case I would recommend the gallon (around $50 or $60), but it will cover a good deal of space.

The problem is the pad and possibly wood underneath that make have gotten soaked by rover's golden nectar.

You may be able to find a product that will saturate the area well enough to soak down into the pad and remove the smell.

Hopefully it's not in your new home or else it should of been the previous owners who should of got rid of that. If it's in your old home, you can rent your own carpet shampooer, or call a company to come. The worse you might have to do is rip your whole entire carpet out.
