My parents are divorced, and my mom still has her wedding band from the marriage. I was talking to her, and she said that she never wore the band anymore, and I asked if I could have it because it would mean a LOT to me. She agreed. So, what I wanted to do was wear the ring (of course), but it won't fit any of my fingers. I would like to know, can I get the ring melted down or something to fit my finger? I don't know if this makes sense, but I would like to keep the ring as "whole" as possible. I would like to keep it as intact as possible (meaning, I don't want to loose much of the gold). What can a jeweler do to get this ring to fit my finger? Thanks for reading!

You wouldn't be losing any of the gold if it's being made bigger, you didn't specify.

When a ring is enlarged a slit is cut into the ring on the center bottom then stretched open very slightly. A piece of the same metal is then soldered onto the ring (this is not taken from your ring but scrap metal, it's always around on a jeweler's bench), and finished off to match the ring, polished and good to go.

When a ring is sized down two slits are made, again in the bottom, but this time away from the center and more towards the sides and a little of the ring is taken out, however much needs to be in order for the right size. The ring is pulled so the gaps are now closed, it's soldered and polished and then done.

As for price it depends on the ring itself, if there is any design, if it's a channel set and what type of metal.

Make sure that you get a good jewler to work on this ring since it is special. They can cut it down as many sizes as you need. I had to have all of my rings resized becasue I lost a lot of weight. The jewler did a wonderful job. I can't even tell where the ring was cut. THey won't melt the ring down, they will cut out a section and then melt it back together. They can even do odd sizes, Mine is a 5 adn 1/4.

You can take it to any experienced jeweler and they'll either do it themselves or send it off to be resized after, of course, they size the finger you want it to fit.

Call around and ask jewelers if they do it. If they do, just drop in and show them the ring and ask them if they can do and they should be able to give you a quote on the price as well. I've had a couple of rings resized, its inexpensive.

I hope this helps. :)

they can enlarge it to fit you without melting it down and starting over.it will cost you between 20-40 dollars depending on if you have any stones in it.take it to a jeweler to insure that they are using real gold, etc.

the jewler will usually reheat the ring to extend it . it will keep it's beauty or be prettier when he shines it up too !
So a jewler will make it fit for your fingers

if the ring is gold you can take it to the jewler and he can
size it down for you. only if it is gold all the way around
meaning no diamonds half or all the way around.

oh yeah, they can resize it to make it bigger. i don't know if they cut it in one or two places but they add more of the metal and sodder it back together. however, it's best to be when you only need to change it maybe 1 size. It's not good to make it much bigger or smaller.
