I will usually upgrade or do an overhaul of my computer system ever 2 - 2 1/2 years but that's my personal preference seeing as I use my computers for easily 10+ hours a day since I often work from home on them.
I still expect my laptop to survive well into 5 years since I take good care to keep it in a padded sleeve when I travel or move it, and I keep it on a cooling pad to ensure it doesn't over heat.
I wouldn't be surprised if my laptop lasts longer than that but I wouldn't necessarily expect it to.
My battery on the other hand is junk after about 18 months. I only expect that to work sufficiently for TOPS 3 years before I have to replace it for the laptop to be of any atop my lap value. Even then I prefer to have 2 batteries in rather than a battery and a CD drive, but that's how I use my laptop, I rarely need the CD drive in.

3-6 years seems reasonable. But then again, it depends on how hard you are on it and the kind of things you want to do with it. Cutting edge stuff and getting knocked around from hard travel will make you want to retire it earlier than it would if it never left home and all you wanted to do was surf the internet and do word processing.

Depending on how advanced a laptop you purchase, you can expect to get three to five years of good use out of the laptop.

1-2 years. But i like to game and stuff. So laptops arent optimal for me.
