Yes, it is definitely possible to have a nice life without a college degree. A lot of successful people start their own businesses without it. If you want to work for somebody, I would recommend getting a degree. Without it, you will not get far in corporate America. If you wouldn't mind starting your own business or something like that, you definitely don't need a degree. Good luck with everything.

There are lots of jobs that pay well without requiring a college degree, and most require a special skill. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, these include (with average hourly salary in 2004):

$19.90 Electricians
$22.78 Telecommunications Equipment Installers/Repairers
$20.58 Postal Service Workers
$22.01 Police Officers
$24.00 Power Plant Operators
$23.33 Line Repairers and Installers
$23.26 Rail Transportation Workers
$20.11 Brick Masons and Stonemasons

Good luck!

You're right about the crappy jobs thing. You can work your way up through an organization, but most organizations will cap your salary unless you have a degree. You should try to go back to school. Maybe you were just in the wrong major. Make a list of things you love, and see if there's anyway to incorporate a major into one or more of those things. Most importantly, do what you think is best for you. If you know for a fact that college is not for you, don't waste your time or money. Just do what feels right.

You don't have to go to school. It's all about experience. Become really good at what you want to do. College is for people who don't want to risk anything and who want a steady job just to get buy. Really successful people are completely dedicated to what they want to do. That is why they don't go to school. The only way to get up there with those rich sons of b**ches is do the job better than them. A degree does give you a backbone in case you get fired but it does not guarantee success. I say do what your heart tells you. Schools not for everyone and success isn't either.

I dropped out of college and never finished but I did find a good paying career that I enjoy and have been in my construction field for almost 30 years now. I own my home, the kids were all raised, and now I have grandbabies to spoil.
This may not be for everyone but my life has turned out okay.

Bill Gates dropped out of college, and he became the richest man on earth
Steve Jobs also did not finish his college, and he became super successful
Michael Dell also did not finish his college

So yes, you can still have a good life without a college degree

If you're motivated enough and have the right connections, then you can definitely become successful without a college degree. If you live in a small town where there is not a lot of opportunity, then relocate to a place where there is. Work hard. That's the key to being successful.

Good luck. :)

I'm 51 yrs. and back in school now. I so very much regret not getting a formal college education so that I could be living a better life now. All i did was work my butt off for someone else who many times didn't appreciate me as much as I should've been appreciated. I'm persuing to become a certified counselor or social worker because I want to be able to serve and help others.

it's probably more like: one will have a meaningful life if you feel like you have something to offer your community and you focus on that "something", which may require college or not. some folks seem to be called to just be good people, not rich, not famous, but good, good father, good employee, and when the dust settles they find they had a nice (nice is an understatement) LIFE. i could go on and on about this. college isn't for everybody and there's enough in the history books to prove it.
