When this happens, I have to disconnect the positive lead to the battery to stop the motor from turning. The engine is not running yet because I have a stuck float and needle in the carb since it sat for a long time without being run. But it fires up when I squirt a little gas into the carb, but then dies out again. The positive battery cable gets really hot when the motor does not stop turning. Any ideas on what it can be?

The starter is internally shorted and made a positive ground internally at the solenoid......Or your battery is too weak and the starter doesn't have enough juice to turn the power off when you turn the key switch off And will stay engaged. To prove my theory.... Start or try to start your truck with another vehicle near it with jumper cables attached to it. When it trys to start and won't quit take the jumper cables and connect them to your battery. If the car stops turning over it's the battery. If it doesn't it's the starter.

Chances are, the selenoid (?sp) has gone bad. That's the little spring loaded gear that when you turn the key, comes out of the starter's motor and connects to the fly wheel, turning your engine over until it starts to run on gas instead of electricity. It's been a long while since I've had to replace one, but it should be about a fifty dollar item at your local auto parts store. If you don't know how to disconnect the battery and turn a few screws yourself, then take it to a reputable mechanic -- they'll charge about $90 per hour for labor.

Your starter solenoid is sticking. It is best to replace it. The battery cable is getting hot because the starter is running to long and overheating. This means that it takes more electricity from the battery to keep it going, and the cable gets warm.

Most solenoids on these trucks are not on the starter they are on the right fender. This is most likely your problem although it still could be the starter itself. The carb however sounds like it needs a rebuild. Hope this helps!!

this happened to my husbands truck not to long ago, i will give you what i know, he was having problems with his started so he got another rebuilt one from pep boys then a few months later we were driving and their was a weird racket sound kinda like a grinding well bye the time we got it home it just died. when trying to start it again it was doing just exactly that it kept going even after the key was out. he wound up replacing the starter again and it seems to be fine for the moment any way good luck.

Either the starter itself is faulty, or the switch in the steering column has a short. It is much easier to get to the starter motor than to take the steering column apart, so I would start there.
Good luck.
