I think it is a lovely name for a little girl. I also like that name but i would like to call mine Arwen which is quite similar the Eowyn.
I think it is really nice to call your child a name out of a fantastic book and movie and i totally agree with you.

Personally, I have a problem giving a child a name that you have to tell us how to pronounce. It's pretty, but will be a pain for a child. I don't know that naming after a character is such a bad thing. My son goes to school (kindergarten) with a boy named Anakin, but spelled Anikin (Star Wars). I like the name. But there's no confusion on how to pronounce that. My only beef is the difficulty of the name.

Each generation has its "movie names" and others from popular culture.
One problem she might have liviing with this name day in and day out is people who hear it not knowing how to spell it and people reading it not knowing how to pronounce it. This can be hard, especially for a kid.
Maybe a good compormise would be to choose a less unusual first name and have Eowyn as her middle name.

I think it would be pretty tough on a child. I was given a 'different' name (actually, several of them) and I had to tell every teacher I had, all through school, how to pronounce it. What about giving it to her as a middle name? Give her a semi-normal first name and that for her second? You could call her by it then, if you wanted.

it's sounds fine to me, but I'm a Lord of the Rings fanatic and want to go back to riding horses and swinging swords. You might try something very few people have heard of such as Finduilas or Idril or even Luthien if you want to go with a Tolkien name. Of course then if she ever meets a Tolkien fan...... well, lets just say the topic of conversation has already been determined.

G'day shr-lzbth,
Thank you for your question.
Eowyn means horse lover and is of similar rank to a princess in Lord of the Rings. Phillippa has a similar meaning in Greek.
I think that it would be a good name.
Regards

i might in no way do it, yet when I had to make your recommendations up on i might probably p.c.. the two Theoden (call him Theo) or Samwise (Sam) for a boy and Arwen for a woman. Eowyn is extraordinarily, yet too available for me.

Hi!
I read once that a good exercice would be to present yourself to ppl you just met with the name you want to put to your child...see their reaction...that's what your child will get.

It's about as nice as naming the kid Kal-L from the Superman trilogy. How'd you like to get stuck with that moniker. Yikes!!!!

DON'T DO IT! You name your PETS after famous characters of books and movies. Besides, imagine trying to yell that name to call them. It sounds like a mouth full.
