A 1786 is a decent score that should meet the standardized test requirements at many American colleges and universities. That being said, It is important to know the score for each section of the SAT. Most colleges are not using the writing portion of the exam at all, or they are not weighting it as much as the critical reading and math sections. If your cousin got a 700 on both the CR and math sections, and only a 386 on the writing, he or she will probably be more competitive at most schools than if the total score is evenly divided. Of course, if that is the case, he/she should still try to improve the writing score. Lastly, your cousin should probably take the SAT again no matter what. The colleges he/she applies to will pull the highest scores for each section, even when taken on different dates.

As some responders know, the NEW SAT has a total score possibility of 2400. 1786 is not particularly high. Acceptable for many schools, but no doubt on the low-end for the highest level, most competitive schools.

As someone else pointed out though, there's more to it..GPA, what types (ie how rigorous a courseload) of classes, what extracurriculars, sports, etc.? SAT Subject Test scores? AP test scores (assuming AP classes taken...)? Any unusual talents you can bring to the college?

If there's time, do more pre-test prep work (ie practice tests, courses, etc.) and take the SATs again.

1786 is a pretty good score. With the new writing section that has been added to the SATs, colleges aren't as obsessive about the test, since the writing is a subjective section. Although most ivy leagues accept about a 2000+ score, many good state colleges would accept your cousin's score. (Of course, extracurricular activites and such are crucial as well!)

Its not great but, tell him to also take the ACT's. Some people say that's a waste of time but, some colleges will look at both scores. The ACT's test in a different way so, where he might not have done awesome on the SAT's, he might do better on the ACT's.

confident, yet narrow, maximum faculties prefer a minimum of a 2.5. i might propose ou pass to a community college first, greater decrease priced and no standards to et in, and then take classes you recognize you're able to do nicely in to coach you're able to do college artwork at a extreme gpa point, then after a year or 2 pass over. The extras will help in admission nonetheless, only wish that the reviewer is an eagle scout too.
