I have to create a speech on why Canada shouldnt raise the Age of consent from 14 to 16.. Does anyone have any facts or ideas on what I should use for this debate? I have been researching this topic for a bit now and have only come up with the same answers. If you have any ideas to help me then it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This is for a debate in school, not something I chose! Something I was given as an assignment so people know.

Here are some ideas:
1. 14 years olds have recently been convicted of such crimes as murder, grand theft, etc.. It is unreasonable to say that a 14 year old is responsible for crime, but not responsible enough to engage in sexual conduct.
2. Mother nature knows best -- 14 year olds are physically capable of sexual intercourse -- why deny it?
3. Why have a specific age at all? should not the statutory rape depend on SPECIFIC facts of the case?

First of all i would like to say that i do not see any reason why consent should be less than 18 years of age. Since this is an assignment given to you you must improvise. You can use the idea that at the age of 14 a person is mature enough to make such a choice. (girls usually start menstruating b4 this age) You can write about individual freedom/right to make such choices. Also, if u want to be creative u can write about how back in the day people were courting at this age n then getting married. Also, In the US and other countries the age for consent was as low as 10. You can also go the religious route and research how in the bible, Talmud Torah and other religious texts; also ancient Greeks Romans Egyptians etc.. all condoned sex at a young age. These are topics that u might want to research for ur speech.

Age of consent should be raised to 18. Neither a 14 nor 16 year old understand the ramifications of sex. Sex is to make babies. If you're not mature enough to raise a child don't have sex. End of argument. There is no commitment on the behalf of the males and if the girl gets pregnant she's the one with the bad reputation not the boy. He can skidaddle off to nowhereland and girl goes through pregnancy on her own.

Wow. Tough argument to make. I would argue that from a historical perspective, 14 for marriage was common. Marie Antoinette, etc. Geez, that's a debate you should lose. Good luck!

Sorry, you are on the wrong side of this one. 14 year olds are not mature enough to make sexual decisions. They are barely at 18.

Man, just another reason why Canada is so screwed up. Their government feels it's OK for fourteen year old girls to have consensual sex. Absolutely pitiful!!!! These are CHILDREN!!!
