Maintenance Required light is merely a reminder for the oil change right? I went to jiffylube for the oil change about one or two months ago but this light is on. Do you have any idea why it's doing that? (maybe i forgot to reset the meter?)

The light can be on for many reasons. Sometimes even if the fuel cap is not on securely for example. What kind of car are we talking about? Yes some cars have to be reset after each oil change. Should be in the owners manual. If it still stays on take it to have the codes read than you know for sure. Good Luck!!

Depending on the type of vehicle, engine, etc. There are several ways to reset the maintenance light. I know on some GM cars there's a small button above the oil filter that's really easy to reset when changing it. Most vehicles (but still not all) will 'forget' any check-engine or check-oil, etc. lights if the battery is disconnected for more than 20 minutes...the ECM contains a backup for power failures that holds troublecodes and faults for at least 15 minutes without an external power supply.

First we need to know what car are we talking about.

In some models the check engine light is a reminder of service. It will turn just to remind you to go to the mechanic's garage. You can still go for another 1000 miles if you took good care of the maintenance. You can reset the light following the manufacturers instructions and you are the only one responsible for your car's maintenance.

In most of the models the check engine light is failure indicator and you should pay attention to it. The light can come on for a dozen of reasons, from mild to severe. In this case you should not reset the light just becouse you don't like it. My point is if that is a failure indicator at least you should know about that failure. If your car is a 1996 or newer you can go to Autozone to get a diagnose FOR FREE ! and they can even reset the light.

it just didnt get reset. Do you have a Honda. If so push in the trip button and then while holding it in turn the key forward and keep the button in until the display reads 00000 then it should be reset. But no matter what type of car those monitors have to be reset changing the oil willl not reset it the computer has no idea that you had the oil changed.

My SERVICE light used to go on after I'd get gas.. it turned out that if I didn't turn the gas cap and hear at least three clicks, it created some sort of vapor lock, and there's a sensor in the cap that will turn on the alert light.

But truthfully, it could be a lot of things, because so many of the parts are computerized.

If you're talking about changing the odometer after the oil change, no - I never change mine.

Good luck!

You might need to take it in and have them connect it to an analyzer and diagnose what other problems your car has that needs to be fixed to make the light go out. Some cars also have a reset button up under behind the dash too....you can reset without fixing or keeping proper maintenance up to date on your car to make that light go out... good luck just the same......pcr

The hand book from your vehicle will in most cases tell you how to reset the light, while in some cars like BMW it can only be reset by a dealer with the correct equipment

You should have the instructions to reset it in your owners manual. Simply performing an oil change alone will not reset the light
