It goes in cycles. If you need names go the ATP and WTA websites and you can get all the names and rankings with their country of origin next to them.

The other posters have covered the names quite well; I shan't duplicate.

Russian players, particularly women, were few and far between at top levels, even after Olga Morozova reached the finals of Wimbledon in 1974, upsetting Billie Jean King and Virginia Wade en route. One of the big deciding factors in terms of state support was tennis being reinstated as an Olympic sport, which is also largely why there are suddenly so many Chinese women on tour as well, though the Chinese are a couple of steps behind.

The "shot heard round the world" for Russian tennis came before the breakup of the USSR. The brilliant doubles player Natasha (originally Natalia) Zvereva, the highlight of whose singles career was reaching the final of the 1988 French Open and losing 6-0, 6-0 to Steffi Graf in 38 minutes, once lamented during the presentation ceremony after a tournament that, while she had earned a nice check, she would not be allowed to keep it, as Soviet players and players in other Communist countries had to turn in all their winnings. Zvereva then complained to the Soviet federation that she wanted to keep her prize money, and, perhaps assisted by the noteworthy defection of Martina Navratilova a few years previously, carried her point sufficiently that players became much better off and had much more autonymy than, say, figure skaters. Interestingly, Zvereva was from Belarus.

I play very competive tennis and I am american, but a lot of the good pros are russian because:

1. Tennis is the highest paying sport for women.
2. A lot of the russian tennis players were dirt poor and tennis was a way for them to put food on the table.

I hope that helps...

Most tennis players are russian (or from other Eastern European countries) because it is a less expensive sport to play in Russia than it is in the USA. More people play, more people train, more pros, voila. There are a lot more women than men from Russia. Names:
Men: Nikolay Davydenko, Dmitry Tursonov, Mikhail Youzhny
Women: Maria Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Nadia Petrova, Elena Dementieva, Dinara Safina, Anna Chakvetadze, Vera Zvonareva

Sharapova? Are you all kidding? The puppet is often told what to say and often not, says it not too well. That and she doesnt have much sportmanship to speak of. Kournikova however, considering she didnt know a word fo English when forst came around, speaks better then many Americans. Dementieva doesnt do a bad job these days, its just media and fans rather take what she says and turn her words around.

They are in the zone just know, but it will pass. In the sixties it was the Australians who totaly dominated the tennis, then it was the americans, followed by the swedes. then came the Spaniards, and the Argentinians just know it is the Russians.
