David Eddings wrote a whole series of books that are fun to read. Start with Pawn of Prophecy and see what you think.

Mary Stewart wrote another series that is interesting. The first is The Crystal Cave.

Just read a book called The Memory Keeper's Daughter which was really good. About a doctor who is forced to deliver his own twins, a dighter who has Downs. He gives the child to a maid type lady and asks her to give the child away but instead she takes the child and raises it. Won't ruin the rest, but was a good book.
