They are who you are. Whatever happens to you earliest in life affects you the most profoundly. When you look back from a great age you see that you took a path determined by the fears of your childhood, the traumas, the few special moments of success. It's not possible to become a completely new person, to remake yourself entirely. You can try, but the inner you remains the same.

Yesterday was Today's past, and Tomorrow and beyond, Today's Future. As we cross through the bridge of life (and in life, we are permitted a one-way path only), the past are those which we have covered through, and the present is where we are now. Without the past, there can be no present.
Some people lost memories of their past, especially those who suffer severe senile dementia. We know that with such severe lost of memories (of the past), such people are incapable of functioning (in a normal manner) and need intensive care.
The accumulated experiences and the building up of knowledge/insight/skills from our past shape our outlook and our character and form the true "us". Do we consider these to be so unimportant that we would want to discard all these, and start from ground zero again - blissfully ignorant of everything around us?
When we learn from past experiences, we tend not to repeat mistakes of the past. I try not to repeat the same silly mistake twice. Similarly, from some of the follies of the past, I become less of a fool as time goes on . . ... . fond memories give us the energising strength, sometimes, to venture forward with hopes.

I think that's a really great question. I personally think that our past is very important. There's always parts of our past that we'd rather forget but the truth is, our past makes us who we are today. Our past in insight to the person we used to be, we learn from our past so it's always important to reflect on the good and bad things in our life.

Mind is divided in three parts
1) Parent 2) Adult 3) Child
Past experiences are stored in Parent part.
For any signal mind uses all the three parts, the part you use usually takes the decision. Therefore past is also important to give good guidance.

Everything you are is a product of what you were born with and all your experiences throughout your life. Everything good, bad or otherwise is a part of how you see and deal with the world.

"carrying around your baggage" from one relationship to another is somewhat dependent on how you were brought up. So it is very important to understand your past, your past thoughts, hoe people treated you, how you reacted to how people treated you, etc. Later in life people say "history repeats itself" (unless you find out why it repeats and change that if you don't like it, or learn from it to move on). So yes, memories are very important.

They are important because they are our 'lessons' to learn and then we should modify our thought/action as appropriate so that we can adapt ourselves to live and enjoy life and work. I mean we shouldn't do anything wrong/indecent over and over like problematic people who need proper care from some professionals, rather we should improve our ways of life to excel or be better than our status quo via wise reasoning, self-reflection and self-discipline.

All life experiences whether good or not are important. Your experiences are what shaped who you are today. Today's experiences will impact who you are tomorrow.
If the past wasn't so good, make the now good, If it was good, build on it.
