I have been out of IT for the last 5 years. I want to get back into the field and have 15 years of varied experience. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can update my skills? What areas of IT are hot right now?

IT is really a tough market right now unless you are a super good developer/programmer or a high level sys admin type. People are not upgrading software packages as quickly as they used to and so many jobs have been outsourced over seas. If you have a good career going in another field, that might afford you better job security. There are lots of IT people out of work right now, and the salaries in a lot of areas of IT have actually gone down (at least according to people I have known and have worked with).

It depends where you left off. The business climate is into web/app/database computing and cost reduction by conslidation and application portfolio reduction. Move from many small servers and disks to SAN and larger servers. Utility computing and grid computing is up and coming.

Application development is moving quickly offshore as it is realized that the same sloppy work can be done for 1/4 the price.

Consider sales and sales support...in computing you can usually get by and they are more likely to train you.
