I just bought a 1985 f-350 dually with a 351W I got the truck very cheap but had to Jump it to get it home. It ran about 80 miles with the headlights on after we jumped it just fine. But as soon as we got home and turned it off it would not crank at all with out jumping it for about 10-15 min. I drove it agian today about 70miles after jumping it and again it ran just fine and i put a different battery on it and after running it I shut it off and try to crank it agian and it has nothiing with out jumping it. I believe the alternator has to be ok because of it holding up 80 miles with the headlights on bright along with all the running lights. So possibly the regulator (sp)??? Please help!!!!

How long are you letting it sit after you turn it off? It sounds like you have a current draw, meaning something is staying on with the key off. The best way to find out is to disconnect a battery cable, and atteach an ammeter between the cable and battery terminal. You should see no more than about .3 amp with everything off. This is the amount needed to maintain radio and computer memory and run the clock. Anything over that will drain your battery. Remove fuses one at a time until the draw goes away to find the culprit.

Jump start it and take it to Napa or advance auto part and have them check your charging system. It's free. And will take the guess work out of it.
How can your battery be fine if you have to hook up another vehicle to it to get started? get it checked. If it's you battery that is bad jump start it during the day and drive straight to the auto parts store with no lights on, No Ac,or heat. Don't even turn on the radio. Keep all accessaries off. If it's not the battery then bring a cell phone with you because once you use all the charge in your battery your car will die.
good luck. I believe they can also tell you if your voltage regulator is bad with their machine too.

If your battery is ok, and your alternator and regulator is good, then replace your positive and negative battery cables with new ones. And make sure the neg ground is properly touching bare metal on the block. The last thing could be your starter has a short in it and it is draining the battery over night. Anyway, I hope I helped a little bit. Good luck....pcr

start the truck, after it is running disconnect the battery cables,if it stays running it is not your charging system and more than likely your battery is bad or connections are dirty and will need to be cleaned and tightened.

the alternator charges the battery while running, if it is a new battery, yet won't start it is probably the alt. might just need to be adjusted, alt. belt.

it is most likely the alternator that is shot or somthing so i would advise you to buy another one.
