God, the guys above are thick. The countries named were all members of the Warsaw Pact, a Soviet-controlled counterpart to NATO.

To complete rosbif's answer as well as being members of the Warsaw Pact the three countries were also members of the COMECON (Council for Mutual Economic Assistance), the communist block equivalent of the European Economic Community.
