IMO the gamecube or the ps2. My ps2 is screwed now because of a bug in it, that was in the early ps2 systems, and now it won't play hardly any games.
When the Wii comes out it will dominate for a long while, but for now, ps2 or gamecube.

OK....if you're looking for a system that is best online then i would have to say Xbox....it has much better games that are only for Xbox....now PS2 has a few good games but I'm not into Anemia stuff.....and the GameCube is just yuck...those are almost all kiddy games and stuff....I would have to say Xbox is the best...and the Xbox360 is probably going to be the best of this next-generation systems.....so Xbox is probably the best. Now there is Nintendo DS but that's probably the worst because the Psp is a way better hand-held system....so that pretty much it....

that depends on the person. if you like RPG's, then PS2 was your best bet. if you liked First Person Shooters, then Xbox. if you liked multiplayer, then gamecube. that's not to say that those were the only Genres on those systems, but that's generally what sold best for them
