it laid in my yard all night and part of the day and I didn't notice before the police found it, but I'm wondering what I'd have done if I found it first.Would you even wonder or just know what to do?

he didn't unknowingly drop it. he couldn't get it open and found out some friends told on him so he ditched it.

This sounds like a question of ethics........
I am an ethical person.I would report it to the authorities..I bet you would too.......

It would be EXTREMELY Difficult for someone to Just "DROP" a Safe in My Backyard -- since I live Rurally -- but given that I do my Yardwork on a daily basis (I have a large yard -- so I do it by sections) ...
IF I saw a 'safe' in my backyard that was NOT there the day before -- I'd call the police, TELL Them to come right over, and ASK them to check the REST of my property to ENSURE that NO ONE is hiding somewhere that is hard to figure out (like in the natural forest area behind my home!)

It depends....it really does depend on what my thought processes are at the time and whether I am still in rough situation from not having a full-time job. I would hope that I would be honest and report it, but everyone has limits to their ability to withstand temptation.

I would have looked to see if there were any identifying marks to tell me who it belonged to, if there were none, I'd report it and make sure the cops found the owner.
If no one came forward, I'd claim what was inside because it was found on my property.

I'd take a couple hundred bucks ( i would just say i wanted to know what was inside) then I'd call the police. the thief did ligitly take it to begin w/ they would assume he has it.

truthly i would take the money but than again i won't .
i would return it to the police station. sometimes you'll get award for it. if not; think of it as a good deed:)

how can a thief drop a safe full of money in your backyard? A safe is to heavy to carry and I doubt he wouldn't realize he dropped it

Turn it in, how would you feel if it had been stolen from you? I would turn it in and hope that no one claims it, then it would come back to me and I'd go shopping.
