The wall of alveoli consist of two types pf alveolar epithelial cells.The more numerous type 1 alveolar cells are simple squamous epithelial cells that form a nearly continous lining of the alveolar wall.Type 2 alveolar cells also called septal cells are fewer in number and found between type1 alveolar cells.The thin type1 alveolar cells are the main sites of gas exchange.Type 2 alveolar cells rounded or cuboidal epithelial cells with free surfaces containing microvilli,secrete alveolar fluid which keeps the surface between the cells and the air moist.
