It's a simple matter of gravity. However, on an extremely windy day, the apple may fall a bit farther away. During a tornado, the apple could actually fall under another tree. Maybe even under a cow.

because the the apple would fall straught down by the force of gravity..if theres wind or branches in the way it would still be close by the tree.

Well, usually the branches of apple trees dont extend far. But figuratively, behaviors are generally learned from those that we are around. ex: if you are always around people that swear, it becomes a natural tendency to swear around those people, and slowly around others.
