Jupiter has 63 known satellites.

2006-11-15 13:27:56 · answer #1 · answered by donald r 1 · 1 0

Jupiter has 63 moons or satellites.
There are four Galilean satellites. They are named so because they were the only four moons that Galileo was able to see. They are also the largest of Jupiter's moons. If Ganymede, the largest of the four, were not bound to Jupiter, it would be considered a planet in its own right. It is actually bigger than Mercury,
There are 57 other moons that have been discovered around Jupiter. The inner 24, including the Galilean satellites, orbit in the same direction as Jupiter spins. The outer 33 orbit in the opposite direction.

Hello Palee:

Jupiter is 558,000,000 km away from Earth on average.
It is the largest planet in our solar system and has a diameter of 142,800 Km (11 times the diameter of the Earth). Its surface is swept by raging winds that often are in excess of 400 Km/Hr. Through a fairly basic telescope one can see swirls of color on the surface of the planet and those are thought to be swirling gases that rise when hot and sink back down as they cool off.
While the majority of Jupiter is thought to be gas, it does have a somewhat metalic central core about twice the size of Earth.
An unusual situation exists in the core where hydrogen and helium are under such extreme pressures that those gases have become metalic in nature. That is unheard of here on Earth.

Jupiter has four major moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and
Callisto. Besides that, there are 57 smaller moons which may
have been captured by Jupiter's powerful gravity as they flew through space and came close to the planet. The orbits of
these smaller moons do not seem coincide with those of the
four larger moons. I do not claim to have expertise on this.
However:

For more interesting facts about Jupiter do a web search on
keywords "Curious" and "Cornell" to get to Cornell University's
most interesting Astronomy site. they have some splendid information and photos of Jupiter and its moons.
