Try running the Network Setup Wizard. If that doesn't solve your problem, check the network status to see if you're receiving any packets. If not, it may be due to a firewall. Some people prefer not to disable their firewalls, but its often easiest to just turn it off and then network your PC. You can always turn it back on once your computer has been configured for the network. Also, check to see that the workgroup settings on your computer match the workgroup settings on the rest of the network.

The actual physical lan card will nto aftect your workdgroup.

Make sure the new PC has the correct work-group setup, and make sure that your new PC is logically connected to your other computers -- i.e. you should be able to physically trace a network cable from PC1 to PC2 (through routers if need be) -- the 2 machines need to be in the same physical network in order to see each other.

No , the NIC does not affect this. Its a little hard to troubleshoot a network issue without more info, but you can definitly chekc this article out directly from Microsoft "Adding a new computer to an existing Windows network " http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/hnw_preexisting_network_overvieww.mspx?mfr=true Hope that helps!!
