Yes, sony has confirmed that it will be backward compatible with all PS1 and PS2 games.

Yes, there will be a playstation button on the controller so you can play playstation 1 and 2 games on the playstation 3. However, games that have different controllers like Guitar Hero will be unplayable on the PS3.

I read the paper, and people are having trouble with backwards compatibility. Some games worked but others either froze or just didnt work. It probably sucks having to spend $600 and not being able to play old games. Either way, if you are going to buy it, wait a month or two for all the kinks and bugs to be fixed.

According to Sony some will be able to be played on the new format but some won't. They are saying which ones won't but will issue a press release within the next 30 days.

I'm not sure about the PS1 games but I'm definetely sure you can play PS2 games.
