Thanks everyone. I know how to pronounce them, otherwise I would not have asked this question. My real question is, Did you ever wonder why?

I think the two words rhyme especially with respect to the last syllable. The difference they have, which is fairly noticeable, is the way the two are pronounced. Patio does not have a long "a" but ratio has.

Probably for the same reason that 'word' and 'ford' don't rhyme. Each word is derived from a word of a different laguage. Patio is Latin, and Ratio is Greek. English doesn't make a whole lot of sense. But, it is the international language of diplomacy and economics.

Patio is a word derived from the Irish, as in "Who was outside your house last night?" Saints preserve us, twas Pati O'Furniture ! And if someone asked if you know of a rat-i-o, a person would likely say "Sure and I have a TV too."

It's really just how the English language works. Patio is paht-ee-oh and ratio is ray-show...something like that.

well, it's the way they are pronounced. patio has a short a and ratio has a long one. the 'tio' in ratio has a 'ch' sound to it. the 'io' in patio sounds like 'eo' in rodeo......
hope it helps.......^_^
