I know good service is key, but aside from that how can I get a lot of tips? I work at a fairly busy coffee shop and I would like feedback about how you feel about giving a barista tips. Do you feel obligated to put a dollar in the tip jar if you see a lot of dollar bills? There are also people who will allow me to take change out of my tips if i run out of pennies or nickles so I can give them back ALL their change.

Personally I cannot imagine giving a tip to you simply because you served me coffee. It makes no sense.

However, I can see that if you bust your butt and hurry with my coffee, if it looks like you're really working and you're not an idiot who forgets my name or spells it wrong ("Tim" is not spelled with a P), if you SMILE, acts FRIENDLY, and gets my drink RIGHT, I'll probably actually tip if I'm a regular. Especially if you sneek in an extra shot, or do something a little special every once in a while. Definitely give you my change.

And since on principle I do not tip baristas, if you can get my money your tips should skyrocket.

I used to be a barista and found a lot of what you have - if there was money in the jar you're more likely to get tips (and if you have bills people are more likely to give bills). I found some people would just take from the tip jar cause they didn't know it was for tips (so if you have something with a lid that's good).

I also found I got much better tips in the morning (when it was busier and people really needed coffee) than in the afternoon. People are more likely to tip if you're fast, but I rarely found people would come back to tip if the drink was good. Also, the regulars liked it when I remembered their drinks. I remember some customers being turned off by the mess (but it's hard to keep grounds from getting everywhere when you're busy)

But there's always the people who just don't believe in tipping (especially when they're paying $3-4 for a drink)

You can get good tips by treating the customer as a person, I mean by getting to know them instead of just serving them their coffee and sending them on their merry way. As a Barista, you usually see the same people everyday. I usually say something like "Hey, I see you in here all the time, what's your name?" Then I tell them my name. When they come back I call them by their name and it makes them feel special.

If I know that Mary drinks a small latte everyday, I'll start making her drink when I see her come in the door and by the time she is at the register, her drink is ready. I worked at this one Starbucks for 3 years and I would work the bar and have almost everyones drink ready by the time they finished paying.

Customers are more likely to tip when they feel that they know you. If you take the time to get to know them, they're more likely to tip you instead of the person that just mechanically serves them coffee.
