Her original name was Isabella Van Wagner. According ot her biographer, Nell Painter, "Soujourner Truth, which translates as 'iteinerant preacher,' described her calling ... This haunting new name expressed two of her trhee main preoccupations: transitoriness/permanence and distrust/credibility." The change was prompted by what she beileved was a direct conversation with God.
