Hi, I'm a medical student, and this is what we've learned in class:

Everything that people have said above is true. The cervix has no pain receptors--only pressure receptors--so you'll only feel pressure as they do the swabbing/scraping. Mostly, if people feel pain, it means they are not relaxed enough themselves.

As for birth control pills, oral contraceptives cause an increase in appetite--it is up to you whether or not you gain weight. So, just be on the lookout for an increase in appetite, and control what you eat appropriately.

Paps are no fun, but they don't hurt either. You just feel some pressure as they scrape your cervix. All I can say is don't be afraid and please get them annually. A lot of young women don't think they need it, but I had a cancer scare at 24 so thank God I got them regularly. About the birth control, not everyone gains weight. I've been on them for almost 10 years and I haven't so I'd say that depends on the person.

I am on birth control and yes i did gain weight...i know it sucks but oh well. Pap smears do not hurt, they are actually kind of weird. the thing that i get most nervous about is having my legs spread in front of my guy gyno...lol. it goes by fast and i know you will be just fine, the gyno does many a day and knows what to do. good luck

Pap smears do not hurt..they are just uncomfortable, especially since it is your first time
bc pills can make you gain or lose weight and sometimes your weight doesn't change at all
the pill will also regulate your periods, and they won't be so heavy, or last so long
better safe than sorry

according to the american cancer society, women need to start having pap smears 3 years after they become sexually active, or when they turn 21, whichever comes first. Some doctors try to go outside of these guidelines, but i don't tolerate it. When docs to a pap smear they are really looking for HPV, because it is the leading cause of cervical cancer in women.

No it doesn't hurt at all. They do a breast exam, pelvic exam, and take a swab of your vaginal walls and get it tested for any abnormalites. I've been on birth control for almost 4 years and they haven't made me gain any weight, but I do think it depends on which pill and the person.

i cant help you with the birth control questions, but for a pap smear all they do is insert a long cotton swabby sort of thing like the thing they use for testing for strep throut up your vagina and they just get a sample of i think its vaginal discharge or maybe tissue. it doesnt hurt at all, or it hurts barely at all. way less that a shot.
