What is dark matter? It cant be seen because it is impervious to light, and it cant be touched because it doesnt interact perceptibly with ordinary matter. In cosmology, dark matter refers to hypothetical matter particles, of unknown composition, that do not emit or reflect enough electromagnetic radiation to be detected directly, but whose presence can be inferred from gravitational effects on visible matter such as stars and ... Astrophysicists went about trying to obtained the combined mass of the universe. When they did, the results suggested there were large amounts of matter that must have been present to account for the observations yet they could not identify the source. This phenomenon has been given the name "dark matter", and has been a source of intense study (and controversy).

Spirituality is like a type of dark matter- it is claimed to exist but is very difficult to actually observe in its true state. Sometimes what is called "spirituality" is actually a cover for other belief systems; racism, antisemitism, isolationism, fascism, anarchy, pedophilia, etc.... It is probably the one thing that has kept us civilized for so long, but also the one thing that most threatens our existence at the moment.

Yes, it is a mystery - but you have to understand that humans evolved only able to see by a narrow band of electromagnetic radiation (what we call visible light) - people have just realized in the past couple centuries that there are other forms of EM radiation. Likewise, we are just finding out that there are aspects of this universe that we have never perceived before, and it will take time to understand.
