I have a 350 motor with a brand new Edelbrock carburetor & each time I try to start my '67 camaro, the carb catches fire. What am I doing wrong?

Your ignition timing is way off and the spark is firing when the intake valve is open!

Adjust your timing and you should not have the problem. If the timing is correctly set, you most likely have burnt intake valves!

It is likely that your ignition timing is way off, but it's also possible that you have a valve hanging open, which is letting the burning gas come back to the carb and start it on fire. Check the timing first, but if that doesn't do it, look for a stuck valve with the valve covers off. It has to make a heck of a racket regardless.

You need to figure out if it is the carb or the ignition.Disconnect the + wire on the coil and watch to see if the carb is pouring fuel in the engine while cranking. If it isn't then check firing order,18436572. The mechanical timing may be off.
Really need to know what other work was done.

Did you change the engine timing ? It could also be that the floats are stuck and gas is just pouring in and catches fire that way or a combo of the 2. Do you hear a pop like a small back fire or sort of hard to crank turn over then it is definitely timing.

I agree with the others that think it is timing check firing-order.something to think about is a flat cam can cause the back fire of the carb as well.

you are creating a spark near your carb., check your wire connections in this area. make sure you have a wet towle or extingiuser near before you try to start your car.ps good luck., if that doesnt work ! buy a ford.
