Sooners was a term that referred to people that snuck out before the landrun. Usually they would sneak out the night before to stake their claim or hide so that they could wait until the appropriate time to come out of hiding and stake their claim.

I had studied the 50 States of US, there is no Later state. Oklahoma is named " The Sooner State" because Sooners are what you call the people who cheated during the Land Rush. They already claimed for the land even before the race started. That is the bad part of it, however, through the years, there is a better connotation of this, meaning the sooner you get things done quickly the better.

THE LAND WAS ONCE OPEN TO PEOPLE FOR HOMESTEADING, THAT IS WHERE IF YOU LIVE ON A PIECE OF STAKED OUT PROPERTY AND HOLD CLAIM TO IT BY THIS PROCESS OF LIVING ON IT TILL IT WAS PROVEN THAT YOU HAVE LIVED UP TO THE HOMESTEAD ACT, THEN YOU GET TO KEEP THE LAND FOR EVER AND BE AN AMERICAN HOME OWNER (the home doesn't come with it either you have to build it too)AND THE SOONER WERE PEOPLE WHO SNUCK IN DURING THE NIGHT BEFORE PEOPLE WERE SIT AT A STArting point and had to find a way to get to the land they wanted the day of the starting to open the offer of the free land . many choice to not do it legally and were called sooners for doing it and were put in jail for it

When the territory was opened to settlers, a portion snuck in early to grab the choice spots first.
