I'm looking into adopting a chesapeake bay/chocolate lab male puppy, but have concerns how it will be with my 2 small grandchildren and 15 year old cat. Any feedback from owners who have good information would be appreciated.

We have a Chessie that my son adopted when he was a year old. Apart from being a big clumsy moose, this has been a great dog. And they do get big. Ours weighs nearly 80 pounds. He has been very loving with our youngest daughter and grandson, and the cats are his best buddies. He swims with our daughter and trys to pull her out of the pool, like he is "saving" her. He does chases the cats when they feel like running. But if they stop or hiss, he is done. It is all in play. He has knocked our grandson over a time or two, but it was not done to be mean, just that he is a big dog and thinks he is a poodle. We did have him neutered and I think it made a world of difference in him, since he never got the male aggressive notion. He is very loving and very protective of all of us. Just realize that these are big outdoor dogs that need room to run and play and do not do well cooped up. We have nearly two acres and this dog takes up all of it. But overall, he has been a very good family dog for us.

As long as the dog's raised around the things you're concerned about, it'll be great. Retrievers of all kinds are wonderful with children.

They make excellent pets, they like people, i've never heard of one even growling. They love the water and playing in it. You can toss a stick in the water and it will keep retreiving the stick. They need good exsercise.

like all dogs, it depends how they were raised and how they were socialized. It does not depend on the breed it depends on the owner.good luck on finding your dog,im trying also!!
