in my own words: a pun is a play on words. "rites" means "religious rituals/ceremonies that are practiced in churches." "rights" means "a person's freedom to do what he wants/feels."

and why is it funny? well, i don't know what the pun is, because you didn't give an example... but it is usually funny because they replace rites for rights and vice versa so the meaning is twisted... hope it helps...
