Hi there...Common odours that are effective deterrents for dogs are:

Citronella works best for cats, but some dogs also may not like it...as well as citrus scents such as orange or lemon (primarily towards cats), cayenne pepper, coffee grounds, pipe tobacco, lavender oil, lemon grass oil, citronella oil, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, and mustard oil.

"Havahart's Cat Repellent" uses capsaicin pepper and oil of mustard as its active ingredients. It repels by both taste and odor, has a lemon scent.

Every animal responds differently to each of these. Some will not be phased by them and others will be quite revolting.

For training purposes they are applied on items that are to encourage avoidance behaviours and not for use with a squirt bottle as they could harm the eyes or respiratory system. Test each substance and observe to see which works as a deterrent so that accidental injestion does not occur as some could then be fatal.

Many people believe mothballs work, however they are considered toxic. Here's more information on this:

MOTHBALLS are toxic to cats which contains the ingredient Naphthalene. Mothballs are approximately twice as toxic as paradichlorobenzene, and cats are especially sensitive to naphthalene. Signs of ingestion of naphthalene mothballs include emesis, weakness, lethargy, brown-colored mucous membranes and collapses. Paradichlorobenzene mothballs may cause GI upset, ataxia, disorientation, and depression. Elevations in liver serum biochemical values may occur within 72 hours of indigestion.

He is just nervous Take him outside every 2-3 hours and give him a treat the second after he pees and cheer him. In a week he will be great and you can cut it back to every 5-6 hours Then in 2 weeks he should be able to go only 3 times a day. if it doesn't work keep him in a room that you can have pee in and put a babygate up and pee pads down

Don't use moth balls - they are poisonous.

I agree with food where you don't want them to go.

Another couple options: tin foil. They hate the sound! Or, buy a plastic run runner that has the knobby, pointy underside and lay it down pokie side up - pets don't like to walk on it.

Put some of the dogs food where it's favorite pee spot is.
Dogs won't pee where they eat.

Try putting some moth balls in that area, I've heard that works on cats.
