The National Basketball Association had difficulty finding a regular supply of the synthetic leather used to make the old official Spalding balls.

Hope this was helpful.

the league says that the new synthetic ball has a better grip and when wet the ball grips better although quite a few nba players complain about the new ball saying it is slippery when wet and too sticky when dry plus i watched some games and the new ball dosent really bounce off the rim too much i mean it can but where it should it dont i have both balls when u buy a leather ball its kinda sticky or it grips good the new ball to me has a sticky effect when dry and its not that slippery when wet i just say its plyers complaining about it

They said it was to make an official NBA ball that was more consistent and more affordable for people to buy than the leather ball was.
