The psychologist wants the client/patient to be empowered. Not to relay upon them for the answers. But to assist them is finding what is best for them. God bless*

Actually, a psychologist may properly mention options, which are in a way suggestions. At the same time, telling people what to do can cause a great deal of resistance. Some want to be told what to do, but a solution that comes from the outside can easily become bad advice.
Ultimately, the choice is the client (patient)'s. After all, a psychologist is only human and may be completely wrong.
I see the psychologist's as helper as just that. An empowerer as another response touched upon, someone who helps the person work though issues, explore options, find empowerment, and provide support as the person becomes instrumental in his or her own solution finding and resolution.
I might add, I am doing a second Master's in psychology at this time, but my perception is more practical. The principles of self empowerment were a primary part of my approach to tutoring in the physical sciences and English with adult learners first time round.

'Solutions' is not 'the answer' for clients / patients.
Answers have to be found by the individual ~ though these are not necessarily defined as 'answers,' but ways forwards. It's often only in retrospect that an individual can see a moment of understanding, a decision and a series of actions as 'the answer.'
A psychologist / psychotherapists function is to help the person to unscramble their life in a space of safety(where there is no comebacks), and to examine options and find a way forwards.
The Counselling party can help by paraphrasing what's been said, mirroring situations, and maybe suggest alternative perspectives for viewing and clarifications on issues.

There are times when it is ok to suggest solutions, but real change and growth occurs when you learn to develop and select solutions on your own. A psychologist isn't a fortune teller or the village wise man. It would not be good to foster dependency with their clients.

I believe their purpose is to listen and not offer answers or give opinions. Apparently psychologists are supposed to guide you to resolving your own issues, not resolve them for you. That is my understanding anyhow. However I believe they can and will give
suggestions. My psychologist did when I was having problems with my teenage daughter

Their function is to help you find your own solutions - otherwise, you'd be stuck paying a psychologist for the rest of your life.

A psychologist focuses on deep rooted issues and wants you to figure it out for yourself. You might not listen if he tells you what the problem is, but you must come to realize it yourself. Besides if they told you what the problem was instead of letting you come to your own conclusions then they wouldnt get paid as much.

they are supposed to help you come to your own conclusions. how is a stranger that has talked to you for only a few hours (over the span of a few sessions) supposed to be able to tell you the best thing for YOUR life? They don't know you, they arent psychics, their job is to help you explore whats going on in your life and understand yourself better, so that you can figure out what to do on your own.
