Help! I'm sewing a costume for a dance recital that includes a pair of pull-on, elastic-waist pants. The measurements are 35 inch waist and 41 inch hips---how long should the elastic be for the waistband? Thanks!

With a 35" waist, deduct 1" and it should be just right. The elastic will be 34" and then with the small seam you use to connect both ends, it should fit perfectly. Just make sure when you are measuring and cutting the elastic you don't stretch it.

The easiest way is to thread the elastic thru the casing and pin it so it is snug. Then have the person try to take off the pants to see if they are too tight. Stretch the elastic before you thread it thru the casing.
If the above is not an option, make it 1" less than the waist measurement.

if the waist is 35, cut the elastic at 33 overlap about an inch and sew, sew, sew.
