My husband and I both work two jobs and I got pregnant. We were stupid, i'll admit, and didn't have health insurance. We applied for Medicaid and they said that the only way they would help us is if I quit both my jobs and he quit one of his and cut back on his hours on his other one. Meanwhile, there are people out there without any job at all and they keep popping kids out left and right because they know that someone elses tax dollars are going to pay for it. Whatever happened to helping those that help themselves?

There is no way that I am going to sit at home on my lazy but just to get a little help. I refuse to quit my job. I have looked around everywhere and there aren't any other programs out there that will help. Everything is based on your income, which by the way, isn't the greatest but it pays that bills.

Medicaid worked for me while I was pregnant. I was working 75 hr weeks and I was making salary, and I still qualified b/c I was living with my mother at the time. My son is still covered by a medicaid plan. Its done only good for me and mine. I do know what you mean though and it sucks that use the system is being abused and good people get stafted....not right....good posting:-)

I can't believe they told you to quit work. But for the most part doctors only bill when the baby is born (at which point you will quit both jobs, at least for awhile, right?). If you qualify when your baby is actually born they should cover all the doctor and hospital costs. You'll probably not make a lot the month the baby is born with taking off of work for having the baby.

My state has a medicaid step-down program whereby if you give them all the money you make extra beyond what you need to make to qualify for medicaid, just for one month (the month the baby is born) then everything will be covered. This is usually cheaper than paying for the birth. You might see if your state has something like that.

Otherwise the hospital will work with you.

Or if you want, you can go for a homebirth. If you have a trained midwife who carries oxygen, newborn recussitation stuff, and pitocin (for hemorrhage), they are actually very safe, and around here cost $1200-2000, much cheaper than the hospital.

Well this is very stereo typed and shows how closed minded some people are which I think is worse than being on welfare which can be fixed. Some people are on Medicaid because they are getting through school which most programs are a min. of 2-4 years. So if you get into college right out of high school and some people dont you are looking at graduating between 21 and 24 depending on breaks and sick days. Some people dont want to wait that long to have children. Other people work but do not make quite enough to pay medical bills. Other people may be laid off of work due to season Change. There are lots of reasons people are on medicaid it most certainly does not mean you are a dead beat father or whatever closed minded suggestion anyone may have.

I'm sorry to hear that. Alot of Dr's will work out a payment plan with you, and some will even give you a discount if you pay cash at each visit.

It annoys alot of us to see people all around us not working, popping out kids, and having everything they want and need all for having kids, while those of us who work hard in two jobs barely make it every month. Everything works out in the end, just have faith!

By the way, congrats!

Medicade is diffrent than a pregnancy "plan" (government as well) that will allow your family to not make more than $40,000 per year. You apply for that by caling the health dept. If push comes to shove you may have to do what they said, I had BCBS w/ my son & daughter it paid 90% of the materninty bills, I had a compliation delivering my son & my total from the hospital that we were responsible for was near $40,000 not inluding the 1,500 in office visit dedulatables & co pays

WIC told us the same thing.... you make enough to scrape by and live paycheck to paycheck (honestly I might add), but you still make too much for gov't assistance. The working poor..... it really sucks that people with no jobs, who have no intention of finding jobs and just want to live off gov't money live better than some of us. REALLY blows. I am all for helping people that really need it, but it burns me that so many people abuse it and get off scott free. Growl....

Your income must be too high but for them to tell you both to quit is ridulous..how are you supposed to pay your other bills? look through your state to see if they have a program. i know in NYS there is healthy new york which is based on your income.

Yes Medicaid is a "crock". It only benefits the welfare mamas and the deadbeat dads. I hope that everything either has or will turn out alright for you.
