I write much of my own programming for special projects still.

I don't remember the first program I wrote, (over 40 years ago), but the first program I was hired to write was not to write from scratch, but to correct problems in an existing program.

That was a security program for clustered Crays, written in Assembly for the processors used at the time.
The "base" system programming had to be done in assembly. (No "high level" languages existed for the system.)

It was coded onto "punchcards" for transfer to "reel-to-reel" tapes!

I wrote a basic "dos" program in high school. It was a text boxing game. It must have been about 1977 or so. Must have been an exciting game!

My first program was in assembly language back in 1997, i.e. addition of two numbers. This we run on 8085 chip.
