Tough question, girl, and controversial, too. Most Christians would say no to your question. Personally, I say yes. I think it's possible to have a close relationship with God and still listen to the kind of music we want. However, the trick is to not get too caught up in it...to not act out what the music is saying. Like in the song "Promiscious" by Nelly Fertado, as long as you don't actually go out and screw everyone, then it's OK. Especially if you keep in mind that your future hubby is out there somewhere and you'll be promiscious for him!!

It's not an easy world. There's a fine balance of doing right and wrong. I am a Praise and Worship team leader at our church, but I don't limit what I listen to to only the Christain radio station. Sometimes I listen to it to get ideas for our team to sing/play. But I also listen to the Pussycat Dolls, Nelly Fertado, Fergie, Black Eyed Peas, Ludacris, Evanescence, My Chemical Romance, etc... As long as your heart stays true to God, I think you're fine.

Good luck, sweetie. It's all about being real. The people who seem to be "holier than thou" (and you know the kinds of people I'm talking about) are the biggest sinners. They aren't being true to themselves. You can be true to you...like what you like...try to be kind and "Christ-like" and still listen to whatever kind of music you want. Think of it this way...Who did Jesus hang out with? He hung out with tax collectors, prostitutes, the "lowest" of the people. Do you think they only listened to Praise songs written by King David? Or do you think they listened to whatever was "popular" back then. Who knows what that would have been, 2000 years ago. But I can assure you this: it was closely related to what you are listening to now. They continued to listen, I'm sure, even when Jesus was around, and He still forgave them. That is whats so amazing about God's Grace!!! It's an endless stream flowing for you, for me, for whoever else reads this.

If you're still feeling conflicted, try listening to Christian groups. There are so many out there. There are easy listening, rap, boy-band types, Pop, alternative sounding...all of them Christian bands. It's the type of music we like but with a Praise theme. Try it if you want. It's just an idea. You can find them on the web. Most likely, you're going to have to search a bit until you find the type of music you're looking for.

Yes, sweetie, we're all sinners, but by God's grace, as long as we're saved, we're NOT condemned. Good luck.

Although he has fallen out of favor, wasn't MC Hammer a rapper at one point? DIdn't he have a song that talked about having to pray? Didn't he also have a prayer before he went out onto stage every show? And, by the way, wasn't he an ordained minister? And he's going to sizzle for an etermity because of how he earned a living and raised his kids?
I am not overly fond of hip-hop, rap, or new r&b (although, I do me some old Motown). I do, however, listen to a form of music that far too many "good" Christians believe is certain to give you a one-way ticket on the express down elevator:
I listen to heavy metal... bands like GWAR, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Venom, etc. I am a bass player in a heavy metal band.
According to most "good" Christians, although there is no salvation for me, they feel that if they pray for me, then I will see the error of my ways, and will find my way- once again- to the Lord... imagine their surprise when I tell them I am an ordained Christian minister.

Listen, it all boils down to this:
Matthew 7:1
Luke 6:37
John 3:18
John 8: 15
1 Corinthians 4:3
Romans 14:13

The basic meaning is: Judge not, lest ye be judged yourself.
(Oh, wait... isn't that a Metallica lyric?)

HUH? Since when does God not believe in rap and R&B? Why did u single out those music styles? So u r basically saying that all other types of music are "holy"? I'm confused. Since when do rock&roll and pop not talk about explicit things?? Did u know there is something called.......
CHRISTIAN MUSIC? Yes music. for christians. And there is gospel. Gospel MUSIC can sometimes be RAP. Yes. Rap. Kirk Franklin and Yolanda Adams are some popular people.
Whoever told u listening to music was a sin was lying. What will they say next? Painting is a sin? Dancing is a sin?

Who doesn't believe in that? God? What makes one style of music any less sacred than another? It's all about content and context in music that separates one individual song from another.
If you enjoy R&B, rap, and hip-hip, then listen to the stuff. God gave us individual personalities to enjoy different things. Just be mindful of the stuff the songs are about. If there's a particular song that puts disturbing images in your head, listen to a different song with a different context.

If God cares so much, then he'd want you to be happy... and obviously he believes in "that stuff" because it's human nature. Just do what you normally do to be close to God, the music you listen to shouldn't have anything to do with it. Personally, I don't believe in God, but I respect that other people do. Some of the songs I listen to are religious, but it doesn't bother me... and you'd be suprised by how religious some RnB singers are... and I sing in chorus in school and every song I sing is religious, but I respect other people's feelings. It is a little rude to me, but I'm used to people not caring... just don't feel guilty.

You had better stop listening to that Devil's music called Rap, R&B, and/or Hip Hop. Don't you know this is God's test? He want's to know how much you love him, or how much you love Satan and his evil ways. Repent! And do away with such evil deeds. Listen only to God's words, not the Devil's blasphemous music.

Do not listen to these people who accept your wrong choice in listening to rap music, for they are demons disguised as angels. These words they speak are the words of man, and not of God. Christian rap is all a part of Satan's plan. It is disguised as "good" music, because they speak of the Lord, but they only mock our Holy Father in Heaven.

The only music accepted by the Lord is gospel music, and bible hymmes.

How can you love God if you also love music? You've heard Jesus speak. He asked the question "How can you love God, if your heart belongs to money?" he was answered "But Jesus, I donate money every sunday, I love the Lord" to which Jesus replied "If you truley love God, give all your money, all your possesions and follow me"

Chill out. God doesn't believe rap is evil, evil Christian leaders like Pat Roberston who think they are God do. God or Jesus never specified what music is okay, they had much better things to do

There are plenty of Christian rap and hip-hop artists out there. Just do a search for it and you should come up with quite a few options.
